What Happens When A Disc Is Herniated?

Find out why a herniated disc shouldn’t be ignored.

If you were to look at the human spine, you would see that it’s made up of a series of vertebrae with discs in between that help to support and cushion the back. However, if an injury or spinal disease causes the disks to weaken the center of it will pop out and cause nerve compression and pain. A herniated disc is definitely something that requires care, and luckily your Austin, TX chiropractor, Dr. Zeke, is here to help.

Herniated Disc Signs and Symptoms

If you have a herniated disc, here are some of the common symptoms people experience:

  • Pain in the affected area that may even be described as electric in nature. If the compression is in the cervical region (the neck) the shock/pain may radiate down the arms.
  • Besides electric shock-like pain, you may also experience numbness or tingling in that same area.
  • You may also notice muscle weakness due to the herniated disk. Your Austin chiropractic expert will be able to test your reflexes to see if you are dealing with muscle weakness.

Herniated Disc Treatments

Non-surgical options are usually the best course of action against your herniated disc symptoms. Pain medications can be taken to help alleviate the pain, but this is only considered temporarily relief from your symptoms. We can show you some stretching and strengthening exercises that can be performed in the comfort of your home to retrain certain muscles.

If patients are overweight, we will also discuss lifestyle changes to help maintain a healthier weight to improve spinal health. Physical therapy can also help those with disk problems. Ice or heat therapy can be a great way to reduce pain as well.

As if this wasn’t enough, chiropractic manipulation also readjusts your spine to alleviate pain and pressure on certain nerves and disks. Also referred to as spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustment, this technique manipulates certain vertebrae to improve the overall function of the spine.
